April 13, 2022
Honors in the Major faculty member, Dr. Michael D. Franklin, was chosen as the winner of the Florida State University 2022 Faculty Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. The Center for Undergraduate Research & Academic Engagement (CRE) gives out this annual university award to a faculty member who demonstrates excellence in mentoring undergraduate students via the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP). Dr. Franklin's student collaborator, honors student and Presidential Scholar, Nadia Rassech, nominated him based on her experience working together with Dr. Franklin on research this past academic year for an oral history project about Naiad Press, a lesbian publishing company that operated in Tallahassee from 1980 to 2003 and that was the largest of its kind in the world. Their collaboration together and with other students is resulting in an upcoming museum exhibition at FSU’s Museum of Fine Arts that opens on June 9 and runs through October 29, 2022. The name of the exhibition is "It’s A Lot Like Falling in Love: Legacies of Naiad Press and the Tallahassee Lesbian Community.”
