Admission to University Honors

Students are accepted into the University Honors Program by application only. Acceptance occurs prior to enrollment at FSU and is based on an evaluation of the student's entire academic record submitted to the University during the admission process. Students also may apply to the Honors Program at the end of their first semester (lateral admission). More information on each of these modes of acceptance is given below.

High School Students

To apply to the Florida State University Honors Program, potential students must complete following steps:

1. Apply to Florida State University

To be considered for the University Honors program, First-Year applicants must first submit an application to Florida State University and select Yes to the question, “Are you interested in applying to the Honors Program?”

  • When applying through the FSU Application, this question is located on the Additional Academic History page.
  • When applying through the Common App, this question is located under Academics in the Questions section.
  • When applying through the Coalition Application, this question is located under Honors in the Additional Information section.

Once the university application has been submitted, please allow some time for the Honors Application to become available on the Application Status Check. For students applying through the Common App or the Coalition Application, this may take up to 48 hours. Students must indicate their interest in the Honors program and complete their supplemental Honors Application and university application by 11:59 pm EST on December 6, 2020  to be considered for the Honors Program.

 
2. Complete the Honors Application

The Honor Application consists of a series of student dispositions and short answer questions. Applicants must answer every question to be considered for the Honors Program. Applicants to the Honors Program will be evaluated based on a holistic approach including, but not limited to, grades and strength of curriculum, honors and awards, extracurricular achievements, unique individual talents, quality of responses to the short-answer questions, and ACT/SAT test scores.

The academic profile of the middle 50% of applicants admitted to the Honors Program in 2019 was: 4.20-4.60 weighted GPA; 32-34 ACT composite score; 1440-1520 SAT total score.

Honors Program applicants will be notified of whether they were admitted to the FSU Honors Program and if they were named as a finalist for the Presidential Scholars Program. The Honors Program will notify applicants of their selection on February 18th.

Transfer Students

Students who are admitted to Florida State University by transferring may apply for admission to the Honors Program. Applicants will need to meet at least one of the following two requirements to be eligible to apply:

  1. Be in good standing in an Honors Program or Honors College at your current institution or
  2. Have a 3.5 GPA or higher from your current institution.

Students will be evaluated on the basis of cumulative and term GPAs, college coursework, and expressed interest in the Honors Program as reflected in the application. Furthermore, all applications will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis with no guarantee of admission. If accepted, a maximum of 6 honors credits earned in Honors Seminars or comparable honors courses may be accepted toward the Honors Medallion. The application is available here.

Current Florida State University Students: Lateral Admission

Freshmen at Florida State University may be eligible for admission to the University Honors Program via the lateral admission process. Lateral admits join the University Honors Program the spring semester following their first fall semester. They are held to the same retention requirements as students admitted by standard admission.

In order to be considered for lateral admission students must submit the required application found at https://honors-fsu.us.fluidreview.com/. Students will be evaluated on the basis of their FSU cumulative and term GPAs, college coursework, and expressed interest in the Honors Program as reflected in the application. To be competitive, students offered lateral admission generally enroll in at least fifteen (15) graded credit hours and earn a 3.800 FSU GPA during their first fall term. Applications will be available on Thursday, October 1, 2020. All applications are due by 11:59 pm EST on Tuesday, December 1, 2020. Admission decisions will go out after the semester ends once all grades have been posted.
