HEP student Hannah “Grace” Hopke recently presented a paper at the inaugural Richard Macksey National Undergraduate Humanities Research Symposium, which went virtual due to the Covid crisis. Grace’s excellent paper, entitled “Communist Deus Ex Machinas: The Brechtian Epic and Its Influence Today” explores the lasting influence of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s the Threepenny Opera (1928). It can be heard here: https://www.mackseysymposium.org/virtual2020/all/presentations/115/. Her paper has also been published in a journal of conference proceedings for the symposium--The Macksey Journal.

Grace, who was worked closely with HEP faculty member Dr. Arianne Johnson Quinn, is pursuing a BS in Communication Disorders, and is a student leader in the Arts and Culture Committee (HEPlayers).

“I first found out about the Macksey symposium in a meeting with Dr. Quinn to develop a paper I’d written for her and she recommended I apply. In the beginning of February, I received the email notifying me I’d been accepted to present my research on pre-WWII German theatre in April at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. When the novel coronavirus arose, the in-person conference unfortunately have to be cancelled, but the event coordinators created an online virtual symposium and journal in its place. I’m very grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to be involved with this academic forum and what I’ve learned about the process of research, refinement, and sharing with others in the field." - Hannah Grace Hopke
