Laura Anthony earned her B.Sc. in Marine Biology at Western Washington University, where she first became involved in several deep-sea research projects. She came to FSU in 2020 and is now a Ph.D. Candidate in the FSU Department of Biological Science studying the reproduction and physiology of several deep-sea coral species across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. She has had the fortune to spend over one hundred days at sea studying some of the most remote habitats on the planet using unique tools such as human-occupied submersibles. Laura is particularly involved in the National Marine Sanctuary system as a Dr. Nancy Foster Scholar with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
In addition to her research, Laura is passionate about engaging students and the public in science. She works directly with many undergraduate students at the FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory, helping them to develop their scientific skills. Much of her time is also spent sharing her passion for marine science with K-12 classrooms and the general public. Being an Honors Graduate Teaching Fellow has allowed Laura to design an Honors course focused on using narrative structure to effectively and efficiently communicate science to any audience.
While not working, Laura enjoys gardening with native plants, reading Dickens novels, and playing with her very energetic dog.
