Spring 2020 Graduate

Dr. Michael Franklin of the Honors in the Major Program, along with Dr. Kelly Farquharson of the FSU School of Communication Sciences & Disorders and Dr. Andrea Barton-Hulsey, Speech-Language Pathology, would like to congratulate alumna, Sarah Phinney on her recently published article, "Augmentative and Alternative Communication Supports for Language and Literacy in Preschool: Considerations for Down Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder," in the online journal, Seminars in Speech and Language on July 26, 2021. The published manuscript is a collaborative effort with her HITM thesis mentor, Dr. Barton-Hulsey, as well as FSU graduate student Sara Collins, which built upon Sarah's Honors in the Major undergraduate thesis work while at FSU.

Sarah Phinney graduated as an Outstanding Senior Scholar in the Spring 2020 semester, completing the University Honors Program's requirements, successfully defending her Honors in the Major thesis project, and graduating Summa Cum Laude from Florida State University.  Her undergraduate thesis project, titled "Identifying relationships between Speech Ability, Vocabulary Knowledge, and Early Reading Skills: A Comparative Study of Preschoolers with Down Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder," is currently housed in the FSU DigiNole Digital Respository.

Sarah is in her final year of graduate school at Georgia State University to obtain her master's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders in order to become a speech-language pathologist. During the Fall 2021 semester, she will provide clinical services on campus at Georgia State University, as well as complete a part-time internship at an outpatient facility for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
